THE KZN government remains committed to be responsive to the needs of disadvantaged communities.

So said KZN MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Peggy Nkonyeni, during the handover of the Ndalini rural housing project in uPhongolo last week.

Nkonyeni was accompanied by KZN Executive Council Social Cluster members, including MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Bongi Sithole-Moloi, Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation MEC Hlengiwe Mavimbela and uPhongolo Mayor Sibusiso Mhlongo.

Three-hundred housing units were handed over after the completion of phase one of the project. The eventual total yield will be 1 000 houses in wards 4, 8 and 12.

One of the beneficiaries was an epileptic mother of four. Emotional Carol Ntshangase (47) struggled to hold back her tears on receipt of her new home.

She said she could not wait to move into her new house with her children as she would, for the first time, have a well-deserved sleep not having to fear any risks associated with residing in a makeshift mud structure.

‘My years of prayers have been answered today. We have been living in dire conditions for years, but that is about to change.’
