Transnet Port Terminals warns of fake Covid-19 tender and job scams
TPT says it receives about seven calls daily from victims who want to get their money back from criminals
Job seekers and businesses are warned against scammers who request cash upfront to secure Covid-19 related tenders and general employment.
Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) said although social media platforms have, over the years, been used to advertise fake opportunities, fraudsters have increasingly been taking advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic and the desperation of many people seeking income opportunities.
TPT says it receives about seven calls daily from victims who want to get their money back from criminals. ‘Unfortunately it is often too late and the information required by investigators to help them is often not available or outdated.
‘To determine whether adverts are real or fake, there are three main red flags. The first one is that a Transnet email address ends with a dot net (.net).
‘No cellphone numbers are ever shared by recruiters and supply chain management personnel. And lastly, no money is ever required from interested individuals,’ said Mbali Mathenjwa, TPT Corporate Affairs Executive Manager.
TPT has been running a number of awareness campaigns, including one in Richards Bay earlier this year, to give people tips on how to spot job scams.
‘We would like to thank the public for the information they have been sharing with us and for calling our offices when not sure of advertised opportunities,’ said Mathenjwa.
