Key dates to note ahead of 2026 Local Government Elections
Here are the important dates for political parties, independent candidates and voters ahead of the Local Government Elections
With just 61 days to go before South Africans head to the polls for the 2026 Local Government Elections on 4 November, several important Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) deadlines fall in September.
According to the IEC election timetable, political parties, independent candidates and voters should take note of the following key dates:
4 September
Deadline for parties or independent candidates to submit a copy of an identity document and/or a signed acceptance of nomination, where required.
7 September
Final deadline for political parties or independent candidates to submit a copy of an identity document and/or signed acceptance of nomination.
9 September
The IEC will notify candidates, political parties and other relevant persons who have received multiple nominations.
11 September
Deadline for political parties and candidates to substitute candidates or parties, where applicable.
16 September
The IEC will compile the final lists of candidates and make them available.
21 September
Applications for special votes open with the chief electoral officer.
23 September
Political parties and candidates will sign the electoral code of conduct.
25 September
Certificates will be issued to candidates.
12 October
Closing of Applications for special votes
2 November
