'If a deal seems too good to be true, then it probably is'

Richards Bay SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Debbie Ferreria, is urging people to be aware of scam trends as well as the modus operandi being used.
‘People are falling victim to popular scams such as money transfers, change of banking details, sale of platinum, advert scams and identity theft,’ she said. ‘Everyone needs to exercise caution, especially when making purchases online.’
She said people must be vigilant when using money transfer facilities at shops or ATMs, and that ‘if a deal seems too good to be true, then it probably is’.
‘Cybercriminals are targeting those in need of quick money or seeking economic and social freedom, and we anticipate more holiday-related scams going into the festive season.’
Tips to avoid scams
* Do not provide your personal details unless you can verify the person, organisation or website is genuine. If you have any doubts, do not answer any questions and end contact.
* Remain calm and vigilant. Cybercriminals are persuasive and create a sense of urgency, making you believe you will lose out if you don’t act immediately.
* Don’t believe anyone who promises a get-rich-quick scheme.
* Don’t be complacent, criminals don’t discriminate so anyone is a potential victim of fraud.
