Parents called to lead by example

The annual 16 Days of Activism campaign ended yesterday (10 December)

CHAIRPERSON of the Mtubatuba Community Policing Forum (CPF), Sindy Ngubane, has urged parents to ensure they maintain privacy when having sex so their young children are not exposed to it.

Addressing the community during a recent gender-based violence awareness campaign in Dukuduku, Ngubane said the CPF has encountered numerous incidents where primary school learners were caught having sex.

‘When we question them, they say they saw their parents doing it in their presence.

‘Parents must also refrain from fighting in front of their children, because that leads to misbehaviour and bullying in schools. Men must also accept and respect their loved ones when they are not in the mood to make love,’ she said.

Ngubane encouraged the community to break the silence and report abuse cases to the police.

A representative of Age in Action, Nozipho Dlamini, urged the community to also respect elderly citizens.

‘It is disgusting that many elderly people are subjected to ill treatment, sometimes even accused of witchcraft. Elderly citizens have rights like everyone, but are abused emotionally and physically. They are killed and raped.

‘Young people need to honour and respect their grandparents; their well-being should be taken care of,’ Dlamini said.

Mtubatuba police spokesperson, Captain Justice Hlabisa, urged the Mtubatuba Municipality and Department of Social Development to prioritise crèches to accommodate young children in the absence of their parents.

Mtubatuba Deputy Mayor, Mbongeleni Gina, said children grow up with anger when they witness their parents fighting.

Gina said the municipality was committed to be part of all community safety programmes and encouraged people to take care of disabled people.
