Protest action closes R618 between Mtubatuba and St Lucia

Protests began at 4am Tuesday morning and police are on scene

KHULA Village community members this (Tuesday) morning blockaded the R618 between Mtubatuba and St Lucia, at the Bundu Basher road, with burning debris in protest over electricity connections.

Those protesting are reportedly doing so in connection with Eskom having recently removed illegal electricity connections after an overloaded transformer blew.

According to Mtubatuba SAPS communications officer Captain Justice Hlabisa, the protesters want Eskom to install pre-paid electricity meters in their homes so everyone has access to electricity and not just a few.

Mtubatuba SAPS is on scene, as is the Public Order Policing (POP) unit, attempting to disperse the protesters and bring calm to the area.

Meanwhile, there has been no way in or out of St Lucia since the protest began, at about 4am today.
