Applications for lapsed disability grants under way

SASSA has requested affected people to report to the nearest SASSA office with a detailed referral report

THE process of restoring lapsed temporary disability grants is currently under way after the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) suspended 210 778 disability grants nationally and 40 875 temporary disability grants and 2 986 care dependency grants in KwaZulu-Natal at the end of December.

SASSA has requested affected people to report to the nearest SASSA office with a detailed referral report from their doctors, which would confirm the impact of their respective medical conditions or disabilities when submitting new applications.

SASSA staff will obtain applicants’ personal and contact details and contact them to confirm when they can return to the office to complete the process.

Information in the referral letter will be used to inform SASSA doctors, who are required to complete an assessment and recommend whether grants should be awarded or not.

SASSA will, having taken all factors into account, including the medical assessment and after applying the means test, make a decision.

The new award may be for a temporary or permanent period, depending on the circumstances of each applicant.

Applicants for a disability grant can, if the grant is awarded for a temporary period only or is not approved, request SASSA to reconsider the decision.

This must be done within 90 days of being informed of the outcome of the application.

If the reconsidered decision is still unfavourable, the applicant has the right to appeal to the Independent Appeals Tribunal within 90 days of receiving the reconsidered outcome.

Application requirements

Applicants must have the following documents available to complete the application process:
* ID document for self and spouse (where applicable)
* Proof of marital status (marriage certificate, divorce order, death certificate for spouse if widowed)
* Proof of address (utility bill, letter from landlord if renting or letter from councillor)
* Proof of income and assets of self and spouse (if married). This must include confirmation of income from any source – salary, interest on investments, rental income, profit from business or farming, maintenance and any other income. (All social grants are means-tested and the income and assets of both the applicant and his/her spouse are taken into account, regardless of whether they are married in or out of community of property, a civil union, customary marriages or Asiatic rites)
* Proof of contributions for both self and spouse to income tax, medical aid, pension fund or UIF, if applicable * Three months bank statements for both self and spouse.
