Home Affairs issue scam warning

The scammer sends companies and suppliers fraudulent letters requesting quotations

THE Department of Home Affairs has issued a warning to business people and companies, to be aware of a scam targeting suppliers through fraudulent department letters.

The department became aware of fraudulent activities after its finance and supply chain management sections received a flood of complaints from suppliers.

‘Companies and suppliers receive a request for quotations from a Ms N Moyo, who claims to be working in the department finance section,’ said Home Affairs Communications Officer, Siyabulela Qoza.

‘Thereafter, a fraudulent acceptance letter is issued with the delivery and payment details. Immediately after the acceptance letter, another letter is dispatched, directing the would-be victim to deliver the goods as a matter of urgency, indicating payment will be made using a delivery note payment method. This is contrary to the department’s policy of paying suppliers’.

‘We want to advise suppliers and the business community to be vigilant around matters of procurement. If in doubt, contact department officials Lunga Njwabule on 012 4064027 or Thandeka Ngcobo on 012 4062749 to verify transactions,’ Qoza said.
