Water safety tips amid heavy rain and flooding

People must avoid swimming in any flowing rivers

Following the drowning of two girls in Jozini earlier this month, Richards Bay Sea Rescue Water Safety Instructor, Mncedisi Hlalantu, has shared water safety tips in an effort to save lives.

‘Teaching people about the danger posed by water is extremely important,’ said Hlalantu, particularly in light of the recent heavy rains and floods.

Tips on water safety

– People should always avoid crossing an overflowing river or swollen streams.

– During heavy rains, it’s imperative that people stay indoors if the structure is stable.

– People must avoid swimming in any flowing rivers.

– Motorists must never attempt to cross flooded roads, rather seek higher ground.

– Extra caution must be taken at night during heavy rains as it can be more difficult to recognise flood dangers.

– If water enters a building, occupants must switch off the electrical supply to the building before moving belongings to a safe place.

– Ensure all animals are protected during floods.

– People living in low-lying areas must monitor rising water levels and abandon homes if evacuation is required, or risk being cut off.

For any water-related emergencies, dial 112 for assistance.

Sea Rescue water safety instructors are located countrywide and offer free water safety lessons to schools and businesses.
