RBIDZ geared for positive change through ACTION within the region
As the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone, we regard sustainable giving as a benefactor for a solid foundation that potentiates a promising future for individuals, communities, and the nation as a whole.
Fervent to transformation action and community development, the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone originated programmes that encourage meaningful contribution with an intent to drive socio- economic impact by addressing challenges caused by unemployment and poverty.
In doing so, the RBIDZ contributes to various community programmes such as Back to School, supporting disadvantaged learners with basic learning essentials; Study Assistance Programmes, offering funding to local students pursuing their studies at different tertiary institutions, as well as supporting various emerging farmers with equipment such as boreholes, irrigation systems, fencing, fertilisers and chemicals, as well as tractors to assist them grow their potential in the agricultural sector.
The agribusinesses spearheaded by various co-operatives are already making a difference in their communities, as they are already employing locals at a small scale, as well as closing the gap of poverty by providing food for many disadvantaged families.
Recently the RBIDZ donated tractors and ploughs valued at approximately R2 million to three (3) agribusiness co-operatives. The said co-operatives were overjoyed as their days of borrowing the tractors from their neighbouring farmers are over.
The various co-operatives are producing various seasonal vegetables such as butternuts, beans, mealies, spinach, cabbage, green peppers and potatoes. One co-operative based in Eshowe has advanced a lot since it submitted a proposal for assistance to the RBIDZ two years ago. The co-operative is now selling its produce to the local supermarket, neighbouring schools as well as the Durban market.
This milestone ties back with the co-operative’s initial intent and vision of being a leading co-operative, commercialising its produce and creating much-needed employment opportunities in the community as well as developing the skills of the community members to be self-sufficient, using the available land, hands and assistance offered to small scale farmers by government and companies like RBIDZ.
