Make a will during National Wills Week

South Africans can access free will-drafting services during National Wills Week, helping protect their wishes and provide clarity for loved ones.

WHILE the old adage ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way’ does not pertain to a last will and testament, having a will in place does make a way to protect your wishes.

Legal Aid SA reminds South Africans to take up the opportunity to have a free basic will drafted during National Wills Week, which runs from 14-18 September.

“Do not leave your wishes uncertain, making a valid will is an important part of planning for the future and ensuring your wishes are clearly expressed,” said Bongani Mahlangu, Legal Aid SA KZN spokesperson.

What is a will and why is it important?

Legal Aid SA advises that a will is an important legal document that provides peace of mind by ensuring your wishes are clearly recorded and can be considered after your death.

It sets out how you want your estate to be dealt with and identifies the people or organisations you wish to benefit from your assets.

A valid will can help provide clarity for those left behind and reduce uncertainty about how your estate should be administered.

About National Wills Week

Legal Aid SA, in partnership with the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJ&CD) and the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA), is joining forces with the Master’s Offices and participating law firms and attorneys to support members of the public with access to will-drafting services during National Wills Week.

This collaborative initiative brings together key stakeholders in the justice sector to make will-drafting more accessible to the public and to encourage people to take this important step in planning for the administration of their estates.

During Wills Week, South Africans can get free advice and help with drafting or updating their will from qualified legal professionals.

“We encourage community members to visit our Empangeni office at Mazuli House, 7 Maxwell Street, Empangeni.

“Bring along your ID, a list of the assets and the details of the person(s) you want to leave them to,” concluded Mahlangu .
