Fuel prices set for further increases in March

The hefty rise in fuel prices is a result of increased economic activity

Motorists will have to readjust their travelling budgets as more fuel prices are on the cards.

Petrol is expected to increase by about 66 cents a litre next month, while diesel looks set for a 57 cents rise. Illuminating paraffin will likely increase by 49 cents a litre.

This is according to the Automobile Association (AA) which was commenting on unaudited month-end fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund.

‘We are in an eight-week streak of price climbs with no sign yet of a ceiling,’ said AA Spokesperson, Layton Beard.

The hefty rise in fuel prices is a result of increased economic activity owing to the global roll-out of the Covid-19 vaccine, which has led to firming demand and higher prices.

‘Until oil supply and demand settle into stability, more hikes are likely. And we cannot forget that April will already start with a significant addition of 26 cents a litre to fuel prices because of increases to the General Fuel and Road Accident Fund levies – inflicting further blows to already-battered South African consumers,’ said Beard.

The predicted increases follow the approval of a 3.39% hike in toll tariffs, effective 1 March.
