Hidden gem of Zululand: Reptile City

I was exposed to a vast array of beaches and wildlife parks in my time which were right up my alley.

WHEN I first moved to Richards Bay in my early adolescence, I noticed that people always complained there was nothing to do here and I would soon get bored of living here.

This, however, was not the case. I was exposed to a vast array of beaches and wildlife parks in my time which were right up my alley.

One such place that is vastly underappreciated is Reptile City, situated in KwaMbonambi.

It may seem to be quite the drive for Richards Bay and Empangeni residents, however, it is most definitely worth the day trip.

Growing up in Durban meant going to see all of the big wildlife parks, many of which have fallen into disrepair these past few years.

Reptile City, on the other hand, is a smaller park that is exceptionally well looked after and clean.

The manager, Ryno, and his mother run a tight ship, and it is easy to see that they are passionate about it.

The park hosts a large number of special and exotic animals for a relatively small premises, and has facilities which allow for braais and picnics.

The next time the children moan about being bored on the weekend, take them to Reptile City.

It will be a great day out for them that is both fun and educational.
