Fact checkers warn against new social media job scam

Referred to as ‘engagement bait’, the post has garnered more than 1 000 comments and 519 shares.

FACT checking agencies have warned job seekers against getting caught out by a Facebook page falsely promoting jobs. The ‘SAPS Learnership 2021’ Facebook page was checked out by Africa Check and confirmed to be a scam.

One post on the page says the South African Police Service is looking to recruit 314 youngsters, but this post has been marked as fake by both Africa Check and AFP.

Referred to as ‘engagement bait’, the post has garnered more than 1 000 comments and 519 shares.

Subsequent to this post, the page has advertised apparent job opportunities at Spar and Shoprite.

While the link to the 314 SAPS positions goes to a generic ‘local vacancies updates’ page – unrelated to SAPS – the link on the Spar posts goes through to what could pass as a Spar website, but the web address is ‘sites.google.com’, with just a generic Spar image.

Further, the post asks job seekers to comment ‘help’ in the comments section, if they are interested in a position.

Don’t be caught out by an online scam – here are three pointers to keep you safe:

· Obvious spelling and grammar mistakes = scam

· Posts that link to an unrelated web page = scam

· Post asking job seeker to comment ‘help’ = scam
