Family of four killed in N2 Mkhuze accident

Accident near Baobab truck stop on the national highway claims four lives

FOUR lives were tragically lost as the Easter weekend got off to a heart-breaking start for an Mpumalanga family involved in a fatal accident on the N2 near Mkhuze on Thursday night.

The accident occurred at about 9pm near the Baobab truck stop on the national highway.

In two vehicles, a family from Mpumalanga had been travelling to Richards Bay for the weekend when the tragedy occurred.

According to Investipol Independent Crash Investigation Unit appointed by the family of the deceased, the family had been travelling in convoy, with the Ford Ranger of the deceased’s parents in front, towing a Jeep on a trailer, and their daughter, son-in-law and two small grandchildren in a Renault Clio behind.

A Land Cruiser travelling in the opposite direction (northbound), reportedly collided with the Ranger, just clipping its right-hand side, causing slight damage to its rearview mirror and scratching the side of the vehicle.

The Land Cruiser then collided with the right-hand side of the Jeep that was being towed, causing the tow hitch to be sheared off and the Jeep to roll over onto its side.

The Land Cruiser then collided head-on into the Clio, causing the Clio to leave the road and come to a halt several metres into the grassy area at the roadside.

The impact also caused the Land Cruiser to roll onto its side, and it came to a rest on the roadway.

The occupants of the Clio – a man, his wife and their two young children – were all killed on impact.

Anyone who has any information, or may have witnessed the collision or have any photographs of the scene, is urged to contact Shaun McGuone of Investipol, by phone or WhatsApp on 082 5350111 (all hours) or email crash@investipol.co.za.

The exact cause of the accident will also be the subject of a police investigation.
