Have a cast at the ZYC fishing competition

AVID anglers should stock their tackle boxes and enter the Zululand Yacht Club’s fishing competition on 9-11 April during the new moon spring tides.

This competition is child-friendly and is structured to cater for everyone, whether fishing off a yacht, motorised vessel, fishing ski, dinghy, SUP board or from the banks.

There are many prizes up for grabs in various categories, including the hotly-contested ‘Young Guns’ section.

This competition will be judged solely on measured photos of catches, taken with the official competition measuring tape sponsored by RB Sign & Print, which can be obtained at the briefing on Friday, 9 April at 7pm in The Jib & Anchor Bar.

The judging system promotes catch and release to benefit the eco system.

Dead fish will not be weighed, with both kob over 1m long and garrick making the ‘no-take’ species list. Although a measured and carefully released fish of these species can still win the competition, anyone killing one of these will be disqualified.

The competition runs from the closing of the briefing on Friday night until midday on Sunday.

All entry photos must be posted on the competition WhatsApp group by midday on Sunday for judging.

Photos of catches posted after this deadline will not be considered. Prize-giving will be held at the Jib & Anchor at 1pm on Sunday.

The competition entry fee for members is R75 per adult and R50 for children under 12.

Non-members pay R100 for adults and R75 for under 12s, with pro challenge trophy entries costing an additional R50.

Prizes will be awarded in the categories of open sea, Bay and from the club banks, with the best fish on merit winning each category.

Extra merit will be awarded for fish caught using more challenging fishing methods, such as vertical jigging, drop-shot, spinning and fly fishing.

Both the briefing function and the prize-giving will be done slightly differently from previous competitions in order to observe Covid-19 protocols.

All participants must wear masks, have a valid fishing licence and observe catch restrictions in terms of size, bag and season limits.
