Hidden gems of Richards Bay: Casuarinas

Explore the hidden gems of Richards Bay

CASUARINAS beach in Richards Bay is less of a hidden gem and more of a well-kept local secret.

This is more than likely the case because serious fishermen don’t want holidaymakers and families with screaming children cramping their style.

In order for me to end this tradition of secrecy (sorry fishermen) you merely need to take the first right once you cross the steel bridge, and then you can either go right or left depending on which section of the beach you’d like to go to.

For the smaller section, go left and hug the train tracks until you see a small dirt road on your right.

Follow that and you can’t miss it. If you take a right, carry on until you’re able to cross the train tracks and just keep on going. You’ll more than likely find a spot where you can spread out a beach towel and sunbathe at some point along that road.

Once you’ve reached this, the Richards Bay fishermen’s best kept secret, you’ll get to enjoy all kinds of natural fauna and flora indigenous to our area.

The beach is a lovely spot with shade offered by trees just before you reach the beach sand. Besides the litter sometimes left by unkempt visitors, it is arguably one of the most photogenic spots in Richards Bay and can be a lovely outing for the family.

It is, however, not recommended that visitors to this beach venture too deep into the water lest they step on a sting ray, get bitten by some form of aquatic creature or another, or even get run over by a passing ship as the beach directly overlooks the shipping lane into the harbour.
