No whiff of relief for Meerensee residents

Residents of Garrick Rise in Meerensee are struggling with the stench of a persistent sewage leak

Residents of Garrick Rise in Meerensee are struggling with the stench of a persistent sewage leak, despite reporting the issue to the municipality at the beginning of the month.

Harm Steenkamp, one of the residents who reported the incident, said he is fed up with the lack of support provided by the municipality on the matter.

‘I’m sick and tired of smelling effluent in my own home. Nobody should have to live like this! I’m at my wits end.’

Having begun last year, the leak was previously investigated by municipal staff who reported that the problem was caused by ‘cable theft affecting the sewerage pumps’.

According to Steenkamp, the workers who attended the scene threw chlorine on top of the soil, which was damp from sewage, but they did not fix the damaged manhole or pipes that were actually causing the leak.

When contacted for comment, City of uMhlathuze Communications Officer, Mdu Ncalane said the matter has, once again, been attended to, with the broken manhole cover causing the smell, being sourced and replaced.
