Encouraging the public to vote

KwaZulu-Natal Legislature is launching a voter education campaign

Voting is a civic duty!

The KZN Legislature has a duty to conduct public education as part of its mandate of enhancing public involvement in the democratic processes.
Voting is a democratic right and a civic duty which requires all eligible citizens to participate.
Municipal elections are conducted every five years to entrench democracy in South Africa and to give citizens an opportunity to elect a government they want, where they live. The Legislature is conducting voter education campaigns in all districts of KwaZulu-Natal to educate and encourage citizens to participate in the upcoming municipal elections.

Our voter education campaign focuses on the following important areas:
  • Who can register as a voter?
  • Where can you register?
  • Why should you register?
  • How to check if you are registered?
Municipal elections

In municipal elections, we elect representatives and political parties who we feel must represent us in a municipal council. Elected councillors are responsible for serving communities and delivering services to everyone living in their areas. They also implement and oversee by-laws.

Local government is made up of three different types of municipalities, which are governed by councils:
  • Metros
  • Local Council Municipalities
  • District Council Municipalities
