Pepper spray saves the day

A near catastrophe was averted last week when a couple had to use pepper spray to ward off two raging dogs which attacked them in Roller Ring in Birdswood.
Out for their routine early morning walk, Louise Calitz says she always carries a canister of pepper spray as protection.
‘These two pit bull-type dogs charged at us from a property into which people recently moved. The house is still under construction and the gate opening is closed off with only a shade net.
‘We did not back off or run away. If we did that, they would have attacked us which could have resulted in serious injury,’ said Calitz.
‘My husband, who believes attack is the best form of defence, grabbed the pepper spray from me and sprayed the dogs to ward them off. It did the trick as they hesitated, turned and ran back onto the property.
‘These vicious dogs do not seem well secured and our main concern is that joggers, workers or especially children walking in this street will be attacked and mauled or even killed by these animals.
‘Residents walking or running in Roller Ring should be on high alert,’ Calitz said.
‘People should always carry pepper spray for self-defence or incidents like this.’
