WATCH: Cast away on Pelican Island

The group of fishermen found themselves stuck on the island overnight

A GROUP of Richards Bay fishermen was stranded on Pelican Island on Thursday night after the municipality dumped mounds of rock and sand in preparation for regrading the causeway.

Christiaan Schwarzer and Walter Verschoor and their friends arrived on the island at 7.30am on Thursday, looking forward to a long day of fishing, and planned on leaving in the early evening.

They got their wish, but their long day of fishing stretched throughout the night after a man on a bicycle informed the group that the causeway was being regraded and there was no way for them to leave the island by car.

On further inspection, they realised this was indeed the case, but instead of becoming disheartened, the fishermen decided to make the most of their situation and time off, and spent the night fishing.

Christiaan scored a luck when he reeled in a large ray.

By 10am on Friday, the municipal workers still had not arrived to begin their work regrading the causeway.

Fortunately for the stranded anglers, Corrie Pretorius of Northern Patrollers Group assisted by arranging a TLB to move the pile of sand and stones, setting the fishermen free late Friday morning.
