ULUNDI-BASED non-profit organisation, Vulindlela Community Foundation, last Friday donated school uniforms to four local primary schools.

Accompanied by local ward councillor Muntongenandaba Mthethwa, the NPO went to Sizana and Emkhombe high schools, and Emdumela Secondary School and Ekwendeni Combined School to hand over the items.

NPO chairperson, Nompilo Mthembu said they worked with a local businessman.

‘After discovering there were many needy children in our society, we decided to intervene to ensure that our children all look the same at school.

This would help to boost their self-esteem, allowing them to focus on their studies and compete with others academically.

‘We understand and believe that a poor family background should not be an obstacle to the pupil. It is our responsibility to ensure they do not feel inferior at school.’ She said 26 children benefitted from their Back to School programme.

‘As a community-based organisation, this was one of our attempts to meet the government halfway. ‘We understand the government cannot do everything alone,’ he said.

Mthembu further explained that they have a good relationship with their ward councillor, Cllr Mthethwa. Mthethwa said he was very excited about the contribution made by the local NPO.

‘I have a good working relationship with local businessmen.

I used to ask them to help NPOs so the needy could benefit. I also wish to encourage other business people to play a significant role in changing people’s lives by assisting non-profit organisations that are passionate about helping needy community members,’ Mthethwa said.
