WITH South African Revenue Service (Sars) branches temporarily closed to the public, taxpayers are encouraged to submit their returns online as the tax season begins.

The closure of all branches for physical visits is a precautionary measure to curb the spread of Covid-19 amid rising infections.

‘With the rising case numbers and the onset of the third wave, we have decided to close our branches temporarily for physical visits as from Thursday, 1 July,’ Sars said in a statement.

‘We are able to do so because our digital platforms, as demonstrated during the peak of the second wave, allow taxpayers to continue to fulfill their obligations online.

‘Importantly, the temporary closure of branches will not affect the beginning of the filing season for individuals who traditionally file via eFiling or the Sars MobiApp.

‘These taxpayers are encouraged to continue doing so digitally,’ the revenue collector said. Taxpayers who rely on branches to file their returns will have to wait until August.

‘At this stage, we plan to commence physical branch visits on 16 August, but will review this continuously.’ During the branch closures, taxpayers who require assistance to file online can be assisted telephonically.

Bookings for virtual appointments may be made via the Sars website or by sending an SMS to 47277 with the word ‘Booking’ and your passport, ID or asylum permit number.

A Sars agent will contact you to arrange a booking on your behalf. Taxpayers can use the digital platforms www.Sars.gov.za, and the contact centre (0800 00 7277) will continue to process queries from the public.
