Much-anticipated UFC title fight to go ahead

Many critics, fans and the media bashed Dustin Poirier for not choosing to take part in the title fight for the vacant UFC lightweight title when he was offered it.

THE much-awaited trilogy bout between the two UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) top-tier lightweight prospects is set for Saturday, 10 July.

Many critics, fans and the media bashed Dustin Poirier for not choosing to take part in the title fight for the vacant UFC lightweight title when he was offered it.

Poirier fired back, stating why he chose the McGregor fight over the title bout.

‘I’d have received a base salary of probably not even a third of my base salary for this fight. It just doesn’t make sense. I’m a prize fighter.

‘If I’m going to make five, six, seven, 10 times the amount of money to fight, I will fight. I’m a father, I’m a husband and I have priorities.’

This once again brings up the much-asked question regarding why fighters who are more ‘hyped’ make more money than more serious and higher-rated fighters.

The sport has understandably developed an element of showmanship, but should this take precedence over the sport’s top achievers?

If this was not the case, Poirier would undoubtedly have already claimed the vacant lightweight title and added a defense to his list.
