The Ithute e-learning app helps primary and high school pupils with science subjects, while Moade Education is a general education app used for various other subjects.

The Getabursary app contains information about bursaries and application processes.

Thando graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology and hydrology from the University of Zululand in 2015, but finding a job became a struggle.

The lack of job opportunities did not deter her, but rather motivated her to share her knowledge with rural children, especially girls.

She began teaching physical science and mathematics at schools in the uMkhanyakude district.

‘Most children complete matric with science as a subject without ever being in a proper lab or holding a test tube.

We need to expose them to the subject to ensure they fully understand it when they reach tertiary level.

‘With so many schools asking me to assist, I thought it was time to create the apps to help an even larger audience,’ Thando said.

She then set up a technology and science development company, Base on Science Guidance and Technologies, to support students in a variety of ways.

‘Our hope is to find sponsors. With funding we can increase the number of projects.’

This month, Thando will host a science and technology expo to empower people in uMkhanyakude and surrounding areas.
