ADDRESSING scores of the police officers at Empangeni Rugby Club on Friday, Police Minister Bheki Cele instructed members not to allow anyone to defy the Constitution.

This follows protest action that saw a number of major roads blocked on Friday morning following the incarceration of former president Jacob Zuma late on Wednesday.

Zuma was convicted and sentenced to 15 months imprisonment by the Constitutional Court on Tuesday, 29 June. He was given five days to hand himself over to authorities, failing which police would arrest him at midnight on Wednesday.

Members of the Public Order Policing and Operational Response Services Unit were deployed to the King Cetshwayo region to execute Zuma’s arrest. However, Zuma handed himself over to the Estcourt Correctional services few minutes before the deadline.

Cele warned that any actions defying court orders could lead to chaos: ‘This might encourage South Africans to undermine the rule of law.’

He said anyone found to be breaking the law would be arrested and dealt with accordingly.
