Call to rebuild businesses
A call has been made for Zululanders to stand together and help local businesses to rebuild

With thousands of livelihoods on the line following last week’s riots, a call has been made for Zululanders to stand together and help local businesses to rebuild.
While the big clean-up has already begun, many businesses are facing an uphill battle as they try to recover from the extensive damage caused by the looting and destruction of property.
That is why the ‘Rebuild Zululand’ initiative has been created, to not only help them recoup losses but also to save hundreds of jobs in the process.
‘Our small business communities in Zululand are left in shambles.
‘With our country in the grip of Covid-19, and a struggling economy from the effects of lockdown, these riots could not have come at a worse time,’ said Rebuild Zululand chairperson, Diana Serfontein.
‘It is estimated that the affected communities will take up to two years to recover and recoup what was lost, if possible at all.’
How the initiative will work
Kloppers Incorporated, a law firm based in Empangeni and Richards Bay, has therefore offered to make available their trust account to receive donations earmarked to assist the communities in and around Zululand.
Two committees will be set up from members of the local community, one a small business relief committee that will oversee the funds received and the application and distribution to applicants. An already-formed committee will drive the fundraising, marketing and admin arm.
‘To ensure your funds are accounted for, Kloppers Inc will oversee the receipt and payments into the trust account approved by the relief committee,’ said Serfontein.
She said donations can also come in the form of building services or construction material or any other acts of kindness.
‘The committee will oversee and manage the distribution of sponsored in-kind supplies and services to ensure it reaches those who really need the help.
‘Assisting the smaller businesses in rebuilding is our core aim; we will however not turn away any donations towards food and security drives.
‘We have representatives on our committees who will work with different organisations already established in our community to distribute any donations or resources received,’ she said.
