Two suspects were arrested by KwaMbonambi SAPS along the P232, for possession of goods suspected to be stolen in the recent looting.

Police were working together with members of Umfolozi Traffic Department when they spotted a vehicle coming from Slovo village.

‘The vehicle was carrying two occupants and an infant. It was searched, and groceries were found loaded in the vehicle.
‘The driver failed to provide ownership of the goods in his car, but the female occupant revealed that the groceries belonged to her, and that they were looted from the local supermarket.
‘During the search, police also found a 9mm pistol with one magazine containing six rounds of ammunition.
‘The driver failed to produce a firearm licence.
‘A female suspect was arrested and charged for possession of suspected stolen goods, and the driver was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
‘All recovered items were seized as exhibits,’ said police spokesperson Captain Nkosingiphile Mthethwa.
In a separate incident the previous day, Mthethwa said a group of protesters started throwing stones at the police while they were preventing them from looting shops in KwaMbonambi.
She said during the commotion one protester was shot and died at the scene.
