Heritage month celebrations get under way in Zululand this weekend with a production by local theatre producer and performer, Wellington Makwakwa at the Bon Hotel Empangeni on Saturday from 7pm.
Makwakwa will take to the stage in the show, Magic in the Past, a cultural music explosion that features the award-winning University of Zululand Choir under the leadership of music lecturer and conductor Bhekani Buthelezi.
The piece is directed by the talented director, composer and actor, Bongani Ngcobo of Indabuko African Orchestra, and produced by Unizulu drama lecturer Gift Marovatsanga.

‘We have had a heart-breaking year, from the devastating coronavirus pandemic to violent incidents and civil unrest. I believe it’s time we took a break and looked back at the magic we once had,’ said Makwakwa.
‘Our childhood was nothing but magical! Walking to buy vetkoeks, playing games and the joy of celebrating Christmas.
‘We were raised during incredible times where talent ruled our society. We depended on another and spread love wherever we went. I hope to bring that magic back, even if it’s just for one night.’
Tickets cost R150 and can be purchased from La Fusion Chefs Restaurant Empangeni and Classic Café, or contact 078 2804727.
Limited seats are available and proceeds will go towards Wellington’s annual ‘Christmas with the Gogos’ and Christmas biscuit drive.
