At about 10.30am today, the members reportedly saw poachers onshore and jumped into the shallows to give pursuit.

The poachers opened fire on the Saps members, hitting one in the face. His colleagues returned fire, and it is unclear whether any of the poachers were hit.

The policeman was flown by chopper to Netcare The Bay Hospital where he has just come out of theatre.

He was met at The Bay Hospital by his wife and the wives of colleagues, and was conscious and able to greet them.

Speaking to the ZO, the policeman’s wife said he would be flown to Netcare Umhlanga Hospital, reportedly for surgery to his jaw.
