Road race celebrates school’s centenary

The prestigious private school will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year

The build-up to Inkamana High School’s centenary celebrations will kick off with a 10km road race in Vryheid on Saturday, 5 February.

The prestigious private school, founded by the Catholic Church and built by Benedictine missionaries from Germany, will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year.

Among its eminent alumni are seasoned writer and newspaper columnist Ndumiso Ngcobo, poet Oswald Mbuyiseni Mtshali, anti-apartheid activist and educationist Emmanuel Qashana Khuzwayo, politician and former KZN MEC Gabriel Ndabandaba, Kumba Iron Ore CEO Mpume Zikalala, Chief Albert Luthuli Hospital CEO Dr Thandeka Khanyile-Mbokazi, and KFC Africa COO Thuthuka Nxumalo.

‘This is one of the schools that has consistently produced excellent matric results. It prides itself in producing first-rate leaders in the private and public sectors,’ said Inkamana Athletics Club chairperson Thami Sukazi, as well as the school’s celebrations, the race also forms part of Inkamana Abbey’s centenary which is being celebrated that weekend.

The race will be hosted by Inkamana Athletics Club, which consists of Inkamana High School alumni and other stakeholders.

Despite operating for a number of years, the club was formally accredited by KZN Athletics and Central Gauteng Athletics in 2018, and this will be its inaugural race.

‘Several activities will be part of the build-up to the school’s centenary next year, starting with the 10km race and a 5km fun run, and there will be other entertainment on race weekend which will be announced in due course,’ Sukazi said.

‘The target is to attract at least 1 000 runners from the Zululand district. Everyone who finishes the race will receive a medal, and there will be prizes for the first three finishers in the men’s and women’s categories.’
