Mtubatuba councillors opposed to Zoom council meetings

The decision to hold the meeting digitally was reportedly undertaken by municipal speaker Dipuo Ntuli

EFF and IFP councillors at Mtubatuba Municipality have raised concerns regarding the use of Zoom for a council meeting scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday).

The decision to hold the meeting digitally was reportedly undertaken by municipal speaker Dipuo Ntuli.

This after the Pietermaritzburg High Court last week ordered Ntuli to schedule a council meeting to take place no later than 3 February, in connection with the nullifying of recently-chosen office bearers.

IFP Mtubatuba constituency member Killer Mkhwanazi said the party is confused by Ntuli’s decision to hold the meeting on Zoom, and accuses him of attempting to collapse the meeting at which a motion of no confidence in him is expected to be tabled.

Mtubatuba’s EFF councillors submitted a motion of no confidence against Ntuli (ANC), Mayor Mbongeleni Gina, and his deputy.

The EFF’s motion was supported by the IFP, ACDP and the DA.

Mkhwanazi saidthe IFP is faced with ‘issues’ regarding attending the Zoom meeting; issues which he said include some councillors not having the necessary tools, and some having not received adequate training to attend a Zoom meeting.

However, the party said it would honour the invitation, as will the EFF.

The EFF said it understands the decision to hold a digital meeting may have been done to avoid the spread of Covid-19, but the party is against the decision.
