The cars most likely to be involved in accidents

More than 1 400 Natis (National Traffic Information Systems) motor vehicle makes were identified in the analysis.

A new report from the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) shows that the vehicle models most likely to be involved in fatal accidents in SA include the VW Polo, Toyota Hilux and Toyota Quantum.

The RTMC said these models also accounted for as much as 35% of speeding-related infringements (SIs).

It must be noted that all three vehicles are among the most popular on the road, with the former a best-selling car for more than a decade, while the latter two models are used as public transport vehicles by more than 10 million commuters daily.

The RTMC, an agency of the Department of Transport, said the aim of the report is to provide input to road safety programmes regarding the ‘type of vehicle’ which is involved in fatal crashes.

Fatal crash data recorded on the RTMC National Crash Data Management System (NCDMS) from 1 October 2017 to 30 June 2021 was used in the analysis; a period of 1 369 days (46 months, or 3.8 years). During this period, 48 330 vehicles were involved in 37 583 fatal crashes, with 45 232 fatalities recorded with a severity (deaths per crash) of 1.203.

More than 1 400 Natis (National Traffic Information Systems) motor vehicle makes were identified in the analysis.
RTMC said 30.8% of all fatal crashes during the study period involved Toyota, followed by VW.

In total, these two vehicle makes were involved in 46.7% of fatal crashes. They also accounted for by far the most speeding infringements, making up 36% of all SIs issued from 1 January 2019 to 30 June 2021.

‘While unacceptable, considering Toyota Quantum and Toyota HiAce vehicles are on the road much more than other vehicles and would thus be exposed to more on-road conflict situations and/or to driver fatigue, one could expect more fatal crashes for these classes,’ said the RTMC.

‘The high SIs for especially public transport type vehicles such as Toyota Quantum and Toyota HiAce models are, however, unacceptable and must be addressed,’ it said.

A visual illustration of the over/under-representation for each of the vehicle makes and models for fatal crashes and SIs vs total vehicle population, shows Toyota Quantums are over-represented by 9% on SIs and by 2.9% for all fatal crashes vs total self-propelled vehicle population (TVP), which the report notes is a cause for serious concern.

The number of Volkswagen Polo cars involved in fatal crashes are within 1.0% of the TVP, but are over-represented by 4.5% for SIs vs TVP.

Other over- or under-representations of note are a 3.2% and 1.9% over-representation for both BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz W2 Series vehicles, respectively, for SIs.

‘The rationale for the over/under-representation needs to be further analysed per province/metro to provide better intelligence,’ said the RTMC.

‘More concentrated traffic law enforcement or speed over distance enforcement could address over-representation in SIs,’ it said.
