Thousands arrested in KZN police operations

More than 8 000 suspects arrested across the province

Police operations carried out during February led to the arrest of more than 8 000 suspects in connection with various crimes.

Numerous raids were conducted throughout the province in the hopes of targeting crimes on specific days.

Methods such as roadblocks, raids, stop and searches, compliance inspections at drug dens, as well as liquor outlets were used to reach the desired goal.

‘A total of 2 681 arrests were made for contact crimes,’ said KZN Saps spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala.

‘Contact crime arrests include 139 for murder, 261 for robberies, 209 for rape, 1 780 for assaults, and 108 for trio crimes (carjacking, house robbery and business robbery).

‘A total of 352 arrests were made for property crimes including burglary, theft of vehicles, and stock theft,’ said Gwala.

Dangerous weapons and drugs were also confiscated.

The police urge community members who are involved in community forums and crime fighting groups, to continue due diligence in assisting the SAPS in fighting crime.

‘During this period, many criminal groups were intercepted by police and security companies as they were prowling the streets with the intention of committing crimes,’ said Gwala.

‘We urge citizens to continue providing tip-offs to police on criminal activities by contacting your local police stations or Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or by reporting via the MYSAPS app.’
