WATCH: Artisans arrested at Richards Bay protest

Job seekers take to the streets demanding employment

A protest at the entrance of the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) earlier this morning (Monday) led to the arrest of 33 members of the Richards Bay Local Artisans’ Forum.

After two days of protests staged by unemployed local artisans demanding employment and transparency from the state-owned entity, police were called in.

Speaking to the Zululand Observer, the forum’s deputy chairperson, Vusi Ndaba said they were unhappy with RBIDZ’s recruitment system and vowed that police would work overtime as the picket will continue until their demands are met.

‘They have arrested them today; tomorrow the same thing will happen. The number of artisans arrested today is fewer than the actual number of our members,’ he said.

Protest action last month from the same group saw the members calling on the RBIDZ is employ local artisans.
