Human Rights Month to focus on safety

The right to safety and security is highlighted this humans rights month

As South Africans commemorate Human Rights and remember their struggle to freedom this month, it is important to shine a light on making the country safer.

‘One of the rights we enjoy is the right to safety. If you look at the crime statistics released a few weeks ago, it becomes apparent that much more can be done to keep people safe,’ says ADT head of marketing and communications Charnel Hattingh.

Police Minister Bheki Cele last month released crime statistics, saying the country’s murder rate was ‘worryingly stubborn’.

‘We cannot realistically expect to drive crime out of our communities if we don’t all work together. The starting point must be to ensure your family and neighbours are safe,’ explains Hattingh.

She says proper household security measures must be installed to keep unwanted visitors at bay.

‘Once you have put this system in place, turn your attention to your neighbours. Make sure you share contact details and keep an eye on each other’s homes; you are often the first people to realise if something is wrong next door, which makes you ideal to be the first one to raise the alarm,’ she said.

‘Police and security companies rely heavily on accurate information on crime trends to deploy resources effectively and efficiently.

‘Even if you are not planning to claim from insurance if someone breaks into your parked car, for example, still let the police know.’

Citizens are urged to report all offences to the police despite the magnitude of the crime.
