He was accompanied by Mayor Xolani Bhengu and municipal representatives.

The team headed to Nzalabantu Crossing in ward 5 where the clean-up was initiated, followed by the door-to-door campaign.

Gumede said, according to the Constitution everybody has the right to live in a safe and clean environment.

‘Our municipality has put in place measures to assist the community in correctly dumping their garbage in an attempt to eliminate health hazards and ensure everybody lives in a healthy environment,’ he said.

‘Our main aim is to reduce illegal dumping and restore pride and dignity to the people. We also want to emphasise the importance of taking care of nature.’
