This as a cut-off low forms over Upington in the Northern Cape today, and passes eastwards over the country.

‘Models are indicating persistent rainfall over southeastern parts of KZN from Friday evening, continuing to Saturday evening that could result in flooding,’ said SAWS.

The weather service said this forecast may have significant impacts given the recent heavy weather and flooding events.

Flooding of roads, bridges and low-lying areas is possible, as well as poor driving conditions.

Flooding of settlements and damage to infrastructure could occur, as could mudslides, sinkholes and soil erosion.

There could also be major disruption to traffic flow on potentially flooded roads.

Trajectory of cut-off low
The system is forming over Upington and is expected to make an east-northeast trajectory.
This means central and eastern parts of SA can expect to be affected, as can neighbouring Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

What is a cut-off low?
A cut-off low is an upper air system spinning clockwise 5 500m above the surface.
As with all weather systems, cut-off lows range from mild to severe.
As was seen in the recent Durban flooding event, cut-off lows are erratic and often accompanied by severe weather, including thunderstorms, hail, and damaging winds.
