WATCH: Sewerage flooding at Richards SPCA amid heavy rains

The SPCA has had to temporarily close its gates owing to the flooding

Heavy rains in Richards Bay have forced the temporary closure of the SPCA as staff evacuate animals from kennels flooded by sewerage.

Mop-up operations began in earnest at the onset of this morning’s (Monday) downpour.

Subjected to wading in raw sewerage to rescue dogs from affected kennels, staff members must move the dogs to higher ground.

Once safely removed from the affected kennels, the dogs have to be bathed so as to ensure they do not get sick from exposure to the sewerage.

While the City of uMhlathuze is well aware of the situation, which has been ongoing for years, it has failed to find a solution.

The pump station situated near the SPCA is reportedly problematic, and the municipality has indicated that it has plans to fix it.

The municipality water and sanitation department is arranging a site meeting for tomorrow.
