Release of speedy cheetah at Babanango Game Reserve

The pair will spend six to eight weeks in the boma at Babanango while they grow accustomed to their new habitat.

The long journey of two cheetah brothers from the Eastern Cape culminated in the release of the pair in their new home – Babanango Game Reserve.

Released on 10 May, the pair will spend six to eight weeks in the boma at Babanango while they grow accustomed to their new habitat.

The cheetah brothers were captured in the Eastern Cape and released in Babanango Game Reserve

Cheetah are endangered species, and this relocation forms part of one of the biggest private rewilding projects in the country.

African Habitat Conservancy PR Trish Dlamini said this release is the first of its kind, with many more to come.

As part of their initiative to introduce predatory species into the reserve, Babanango plans to release more cheetahs, lions and elephants before the end of the year.

Visitors can also expect to sight giraffe, zebra and impala that have already been released.

‘A release like this on Babanango Game Reserve has not only ensured these beautiful cats have a new home in the wild heart of Zululand, but will play an important part in the continued survival success of these endangered cats,’ said Dlamini.
