Empangeni police station in top 30 of SA’s most notorious crimes
Shoplifting increases in Richards Bay, according to latest crime stats
Friday’s release of the 2022/23 first quarter crime statistics painted a bleak picture of King Cetshwayo District (KCD).
Empangeni police station, which has a number of satellite stations reporting to it, appeared in the top 30 when it comes to the country’s most notorious crimes.
Falling under KCD, Richards Bay and Empangeni police stations featured in the shoplifting category of the crime stats, accounting for 54.1% combined.
Among other contact crimes, Empangeni police station alone featured in sexual offences, rape, and assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.
The report further revealed that crimes related to burglary at non-residential premises, commercial crimes, and shoplifting were up 24.5% compared with the same period last year.
Nationally, KZN claimed fourth spot on the crime provincial overview table, with murder topping the list at 1 623 compared with 1 404 the previous year.
