Organised by the Linzwa Foundation, Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre and Unizulu’s Department of Consumer Science, the competition is open to all aspiring chefs from King Cetshwayo District schools.
The format of the competition includes two rounds; a main course followed by dessert.
The top 5 contestants will be judged on set elements in both rounds with the judging panel selecting the top 3 from each category.
Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place.
“As an organisation committed to making our community better and promoting development, we are grateful we have Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre committed to the youth,” said Lindiwe Dube, Linzwa Foundation founder.
“This is not just a competition, but a programme that assists young people who love cooking, to sharpen their skills while learning about opportunities through cooking.”
Consumer science ensures the safety of children in the kitchen, with each finalist assigned a mentor. Boardwalk invests all the resources needed for the competition.
“We need more projects like these that concentrate on moulding raw talent in the youth,” continued Dube.
“This year, we are pleased that the Department of Education is showing interest in the programme, and we invite the private sector to also be part of it.
“The more sponsors we have, the better the chances of growing its reach to more rural areas in our district.”
Forms can be obtained online on the Boardwalk Inkwazi Facebook page, at the Boardwalk information counter, the Boardwalk website www.boardwalkinkwazi.co.za or the Boardwalk management offices.
