WATCH: Magnificent whale sightings off Richards Bay

Humpback whales have been seen in their numbers close to the coastline

THE last two weeks have proven fruitful for those wanting to catch a glimpse of the humpback whales during their annual migration from the Antarctic to the warm KZN and Mozambique waters, and back.

Footage of these gentle giants of the sea was on Saturday captured from Alkantstrand, showing a number of whales in local waters.

Last weekend, more than 20 whales were seen gracing Richards Bay’s shores in what is turning out to be an excellent year for humpback sightings.

The annual humpback migration between May and December sees these whales make their way from the cold Antarctic waters to the warm waters off KZN and Mozambique where they give birth and feed before heading back south.

Some years, as in this year, the whales are prolific in number and appear to hug the coast on their travels, while other years they keep their distance.
