BIRDSWOOD in Richards Bay appears to have suffered the worst of the hail and thunderstorm as the weather system quickly swept across the Zululand coastal region.

Other Richards Bay suburbs, as well as Empangeni, experienced a brief storm which brought with it small hail stones this afternoon (Monday).

Earlier weather alerts issued by the SA Weather Service did not include the King Cetshwayo, uMkhanyakude or Zululand districts, with the worst of the storm experienced further inland.

Pietermaritzburg experienced severe winds and heavy hail, while winds in excess of 120km/h were forecast for East London in the Eastern Cape.
