MEC mourns death of murdered CPF chair

Calls for swift police action following the murder

THERE are calls for swift police action following last week’s murder of KZN CPF chairperson Mthunzi Mathenjwa.

Mathenjwa, who is the former ward 29 councillor, was shot and killed outside his home in Eniwe near Empangeni after confronting suspicious individuals. He was declared dead at the scene.

Mathenjwa was elected to the position of provincial chairperson in 2017 after demonstrating a passion for fighting crime while working in the King Cetshwayo District CPF.

His killing sent shock waves through the district as he was known to be a peacemaker and protector of the vulnerable.

Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Sipho Hlomuka condemned the killing but said he was optimistic the police would soon find the killers.

“Those who commit heinous crimes have no place in our communities. We value the contribution made by Mathenjwa and many other crime fighting volunteers,” said Hlomuka.

“The CPF is central to the mobilisation of communities in actively fighting against crime. We urge community crime fighting structures to not be deterred by this painful incident, but to instead soldier on.

“As government, we commit to working with all community crime fighting organisations in our quest to make KZN a safer province.

“We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the Mathenjwa family and all CFP members.”

King Cesthwayo Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase said a murder case was under investigation at Empangeni SAPS but no arrest has yet been made.
