Struggle for water continues for eSikhaleni residents

“There aren't enough water tankers to cover the eSikhaleni cluster, owing to the high demand," says City of uMhlathuze

There are not enough tankers to supply everyone in eSikhaleni with water.

While the City of uMhlathuze works round the clock to restore water to the eSikhaleni cluster after Sunday’s fire at the treatment plant, the residents’ situation grows more dire by the day.

“The community is being supplied with water through tankers which are controlled by councillors and ward committee members.

“There aren’t enough water tankers to cover the eSikhaleni cluster, owing to the high demand,’ said the city on Thursday.

While the municipality continues to make promises, and staff work round the clock to restore water, residents continue to struggle without a drop of the precious resource.

Since Sunday’s fire, thousands of households have been without water and the situation is worsening by the day.

“There are no tankers on site and we have used everything we had,” said one resident.

However, the city has urged the community to be patient during these difficult times.

According to the city, the plant has been cleaned; burnt and damaged parts have been removed, and the installation of new components has been completed.

“We are in the process of connecting a generator to run the plant temporarily as we await the arrival of the new transformer, which is estimated to be on site by next week,” said the municipality.

City of uMhlathuze Mayor Xolani Ngwezi visited the site on Thursday.
