Mtubatuba murder-accused traditional healer case postponed

Traditional healer remanded in custody amid ongoing bail application delays

THE bail application of a traditional healer from kwaMtholo near Mtubatuba, who is in court for the alleged murder of his 60-year-old neighbour in April, was adjourned on Thursday owing to the unavailability of the presiding magistrate.

The stand-in magistrate at KwaMsane Magistrate’s Court remanded Mqadi in custody for him to return to court on 15 September for the continuation of his bail application.

Mqadi’s fiancé and his mother are expected to take the witness stand at his bail application.

Mqadi is accused of fatally gunning down Thobile Phangela on 5 April. He was arrested the following day.

The State is opposed to Mqadi being granted bail for a number of reasons, including that his release on bail could lead to conflict in the kwaMtholo community and concerns that community members would exact their revenge, according to investigating officer Khanyisani Buthelezi.

Previously, Mqadi’s legal representative challenged the testimony given by Buthelezi.
