Dangers of load-shedding highlighted

Mtubatuba family loses everything in house blaze

A FAMILY in Nkundusi area near Mtubatuba lost everything when an electric stove, left on after load-shedding, caused their home to catch alight last week.

Mtubatuba Ward 23 Councillor Siyabonga Mkhumbuzi has since urged residents to switch off all appliances before going to bed.

“The Mbuyazi family lost everything; school uniforms, books, birth certificates for their children’s ID books,” said Mkhumbuzi.

A fireman putting out the blaze

“I called firefighters but it was too late. It is suspected that when the power returned, the stove was on and there was something on top of it which caught alight.”

He said there were four women, aged between 30 and 40, living in the
one-room home, with their children.

“I have called social workers and disaster management to come and assist the family.

Firemen extinguished the blaze but nothing could be salvaged

“I urge the community to unplug their appliances when there is load-shedding to avoid such incidents.

“There have already been three homes destroyed by fire,” he said.
