Child safety a priority this festive season, says Mtuba SAPS

Parents cautioned against getting intoxicated as this puts the children at risk

DROWNINGS, child trafficking, and car accidents are just some of the life-threatening risks facing children this festive season, and parents must be on high alert.

This was the warning from Mtubatuba SAPS as festive season operations, which include increased roadblocks and stop-and-searches, get underway.

Police spokesperson Captain Justice Hlabisa said parents must be particularly cautious at swimming pools and when visiting beaches, ensuring lifeguards are on duty.

He also cautioned parents against getting intoxicated as this puts the children at risk, with many ending up at police stations, traumatised.

“We advise parents to rather take children to pools or choose less busy days to visit the beach,” said Hlabisa.
The police captain said parents must remember that human trafficking is always something to be cautious about.

“People can have fun over the festive season, but they must remember they are still responsible for their children,” said Hlabisa.

Commenting on festive season operations, he said SAPS will work jointly with the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and Mtubatuba Municipality Protective Services in conducting these roadblocks, with SANDF called in where needed.

Cars will also be checked for roadworthiness, and whether they are licensed or registered.
Further warnings were given to taxi drivers to be mindful of their speed, ensure they are rested, that their vehicles are roadworthy, they have the necessary permits, and are driven by licensed drivers.

“They must remember that they are transporting people, which is an important job, especially long distance drivers,” said Hlabisa.
