New South African coins to be launched in 2023

All 11 official languages will feature on the coins alternately over the next 10 years

RECENTLY-announced changes to South Africa’s coins have been gazetted and are set to come into force in January.

From all 11 official South African languages featuring on some of the coins, to whales, the protea and the national flag, the country’s coins are set to receive a massive overhaul.

The Fourth Decimal Coin Series of South Africa will become legal tender in January 2023, following the initial announcement on 31 August.

Key changes include the word ‘South Africa’ being printed on one side on the R5, R2, R1, 50c and 10c coins in a variety of languages.

The coins will be minted on a rotational system, with the use of all official languages being printed on the coins over a certain period of time.

Languages will be alternated annually over the next 10 years.

Other changes include a bee printed on the 10c coin, a protea on the 20c piece, a turaco (loerie) on the 50c coin, the SA flag on the reverse of the R1 coin, and a whale on the face of the R5.
